Store Manager Demands Part-Time Employees Be Available To Work 16 Hours a Day

Has this ever happened to you? You're working a part-time job, and your boss wants you to have the availability of a full-time job. Or how about this one: Your boss complains about being understaffed, and when you ask for more hours, you don't get them. 

Working part-time sucks because your boss always wants way too much from you. They want you to treat this part-time gig like it is the launching pad for a great career when it's usually just working at Chic-Fil-A. When you're in high school especially, your bosses often want to schedule you like you're a full-fledged adult, which is such a bad way to retain employees. No kid is going to be able to sustain working every day after school and during the weekends. One Home Depot store demanded that part-time workers be available to work from 6 AM to 10 PM, and people are questioning their expectations.

See a manager about opening up your availability so we can give more hours to our experienced part- timers. We are entering our busy season and we want to make sure you have first dibs instead of hiring new associates to fill coverage gaps. Just off the top of my head. Mainly you have to step back and look at what you wrote and think: "ok, how many ways could this be perceived." You almost have to critique your own writing as a 3rd person. 430 30

The way it is currently worded almost makes it sound like" if you don't open your availability, we will be taking your hours" in a store where part-timers are already given so little hours. If they worded it similar to as you wrote, or in a similar fashion, it wouldn't cause as much contempt for the people who wrote it. 442

We have some mandatory classes coming up for a new system that we are implementing. The part timers are having trouble getting off of their full time jobs to take said classes, and our director has taken the stance of "well, if they want to keep working here then they will find a way to make it to the classes."
